The Battle for Bollin Wood

Manchester Airport 1997 The Battle for Bollin Wood took place between the authorities and environmental activists who dug in and occupied ancient woodland in the Bollin Valley that was to be destroyed to construct a second runway for Manchester Airport. During the evictions, the activists held-out for weeks by handcuffing and chaining themselves into cemented, arm “lock-ons” in the trees and in the tunnels dug beneath the woods. Although the camps were finally evicted and the runway built, the tactics of the environmental protest movement again showed that they could be a nuisance and make environmentally damaging construction projects that much more expensive for the developers.
